Up in Raincliffe Woods today, nice day despite the cold wind which the trees did their best to shelter me from. Good to see families using the woods. it's a great place for the kids to explore and use their imaginations. The Round House, built by volunteers as part of the Secret Wood Event held in 2011 is always popular with kids of all ages.
The sunshine seems to have brought the birds out, spring is doing it's best to force it's way through and alongside the Nature Trail just off Raincliffe Gate car park the Wild Garlic is now thriving.
A couple of years ago bird feeders were put along the top of the fence which runs around the car park. It makes a great place for people to sit and watch the bird life which visits the tables. Sitting there in the sunshine ,watching the birds flitting in and listening to the song is idyllic. Such a pity that idiots have to spoil it. Fly tipping is a blight on our beauty spots and Raincliffe & Forge Valley unfortunately get their fair share.
We heard recently of a local lady who decided that, to improve her fitness, she would walk regularly from Forge Valley to Throxenby Mere. Unfortunately the first thing that struck her was the amount of rubbish that lay alongside the road. rather than ignore it she combined her fitness regime with litter picking, collecting rubbish as she went.
Over a period of three weeks she had to make six trips to the tip. Her car was so laden with other peoples rubbish that the staff at the tip queried what she was up to.
It is people like her, the unsung Local Heroes that inspire, whilst mindless fools who are too lazy to take rubbish home or to take it to the tip continue to endanger wildlife, litter our beauty spots and care not for those who just wish to enjoy the beauty of the countryside that we are blessed with.
